What Does Subscribe Mean?

To subscribe to a podcast is to ask your computer to check a website for new audio content on a regular basis without yourself having to do it (just like email does).
How Does it Work?

Basically you use a program called a podcatcher to check selected websites at certain intervals (ie. once a day). If it finds that the website has a new audio file available, it downloads it and notifies you that you have a new podcast to listen to.

Where can I get a podcatcher?

There are lots of different types of podcatchers out in the market now. The most common one is made by Apple Computers called iTunes. It is free and works on Windows and Apple computers.

Ok, I have a podcatcher, how to I subscribe

There are two ways of subscribing to a podcast using iTunes.

1. Using the iTunes Directory
   On many podcast sites you will see an icon with text say something like “Subscribe using iTunes”.
• Clicking on this will open iTunes and then open the iTunes Music Store and show you the featured Podcast you clicked on.
• You will see a subscribe button
  
• Clicking on this will subscribe you to the podcast in iTunes and start downloading the latest podcast. It will then check for a new podcast every day (unless you change iTunes Preferences) for new content, as long as iTunes is open.
2. Copying the Subscribe Link
   When subscribing to a podcast, you are essentially telling the podcatcher to look at an RSS page (don’t worry about what RSS is). You can manually enter the link to this page into iTunes or any other podcatcher. To do this do the following:
1. Find the icon or link on the website that says something like RSS, or subscribe to podcast, or feed
2. Right click on the icon or text and select “copy link” from the menu
3. Open your podcaster (ie. iTunes) and select “subscribe to podcast” in it menu. In iTunes you will find it under the “Advanced” menu.
4. Right click and paste the link into the text box that is presented and click subscribe.
5. You podcatcher will now subscribe you to the podcast as start downloading th latest episode.
